Homemade Black Sesame Paste 🖤
Rich, nutty, aromatic, and naturally nutritious — this homemade black sesame paste takes just one ingredient and adds incredible flavor to drinks, desserts, sauces, and baked goods. With a little patience, you can create a silky, fragrant paste that’s even better than store-bought.
Ingredients
-
2 cups (300 g) black sesame seeds
Keep it plain and add sweetener or salt later depending on how you plan to use it.
Method
-
Toast the Sesame Seeds
Add the black sesame seeds to a dry pan. Toast over low heat for about 5 minutes, stirring or tossing frequently.
Because the seeds are already black, be extra careful — they can burn easily even if you can’t see browning. -
Blend into a Fine Meal
Transfer the warm seeds directly to a food processor or blender.
Process until the seeds become a fine powder, scraping down the sides as needed. -
Continue Blending into a Paste
Keep blending on low–medium speed until the seeds release their natural oils and transform into a smooth, runny paste.
This may take 10–20 minutes depending on your appliance.
Important:-
If using a blender, a tamper is essential for proper blending.
-
A food processor is usually easier and safer for this recipe.
-
-
Store
Transfer the paste into a clean, airtight jar. Store at room temperature for 1 week, or in the fridge for up to 1 month.
Tips for Best Results
⭐ Toast gently.
Low heat brings out flavor without bitterness. Once fragrant, remove immediately.
⭐ Blend while warm.
Warm sesame seeds release oils faster, giving you a smoother paste.
⭐ Use a strong appliance.
Weak blenders may overheat. A food processor is usually more reliable.
⭐ Adjust flavor later.
Add sweeteners (honey, maple syrup), salt, vanilla, or even a little coconut oil depending on the recipe you’re making.
⭐ Use in endless ways:
-
Lattes and matcha
-
Ice cream and yogurt bowls
-
Pastries, buns, and cookies
-
Smoothies
-
Sesame sauces for noodles
-
Drizzled over fruit
